How do recommendations actually work?

We look at the books you and another reader have both rated, and measure how closely your ratings actually correlate - not just whether you both read the same genre. Someone who rated the same books the way you did becomes a real Taste Twin. Then, we recommend books they loved that you haven't read yet. You can also find genre-specific Twins, because the reader who shares your taste in fantasy might not be the same reader who shares your taste in thrillers.

If you have a taste profile, it plays a role too. Every review you write adds to a running profile of what you tend to love and dislike - the tags you see on your Library page. Once you and another reader both have enough tagged reviews, we blend that overlap into your correlation as well, alongside your ratings. Agreeing on specific things (a shared love of morally gray characters, say) increases your correlation; a direct disagreement - you loved something they specifically disliked - decreases it.

Every recommendation shows a confidence label (strong, moderate, or weak) so you know how much evidence is actually behind a pick, not just that it made the list.

What happens to my data?

Your ratings and reviews are what power your correlations, so other Taste Twins can see the books you have in common and how you each rated them. Your full library is visible to other Taste Twins by default - you can make it private in your profile settings, which limits what others see to only the books you have in common with them. We never sell your data. See the full Privacy Policy for details.

Do I need a big library to get started?

No. A real correlation needs 5+ books in common with someone, but writing reviews for just 3 books unlocks starter recommendations based on your own taste - even before you've built up shared history with anyone.
